Abstract:
Optical frequency combs are class of precision laser devices that offer a coherent link between the microwave and optical domains. Recent progress in erbium fiber frequency combs points toward their suitability for applications requiring such lasers to operate outside of the laboratory environment. I will describe efforts at AFRL to mature and harden these devices, and subsequently describe two specific comb applications. The first application uses the comb as a coherent divider, providing the gear-down necessary to realize a compact, all-optical atomic clock. The second application uses the comb as a generator of perfectly timed femtosecond pulses, which we employ to transmit timing and synchronization information across free-space optical paths.
